Donya Coldwell Our Diva

Donya Coldwell was fortunate to grow up in a family active in and passionate about The Arts. Both parents were fine singers involved in musical theatre. Donya and her younger sister Karen often participated in their schools’ vocal and dramatic arts programs. When Donya was twelve, she began formal voice lessons at Philadelphia’s Settlement Music School; supposedly “the youngest voice student they’d ever accepted.” Not only did Donya become acquainted with operatic music, but she also had to learn Italian pronunciation. As an adult, Donya has performed in musical theatre, choruses, and choirs throughout Eastern Montgomery and Delaware counties. She loves the old standards—although alert audience members may catch an updated lyric or two. Written by the Gershwin brothers for the contemporary American opera Porgy and Bess, “Summertime” is a favorite of Donya’s, and she hopes it will become one of yours as well.
